About The Making Of The Outdoor, Portable, and IP Rated Sound System For Tin Roof Detroit
Our friends at Tin Roof Detroit asked us to design an impactful outdoor sound system they could roll out to their patio. In general they wanted the most substantial system possible, but needed it to be a quick and easy setup. Given that Tin Roof is a bar/restaurant and live music venue chain with 18 locations across the country, we were excited about the challenge. Consequently, we knew the solution we design here could be a blueprint for their other locations as well. Henceforth, we got right to our drawing board.
The Challenge
Surprisingly, this was a very challenging project. We were tasked to fabricate a custom large portable sound system that was weather rated and needed to be adjustable in height. As nothing like this exists on the market, we had to custom fabricate a solution ourselves and build it in our shop. They had to be able to roll out this system, expand it to the proper height, use it in any weather, and then be able to collapse it and store it again. Quite the daunting task but we were up to the challenge!
Our Solution
Overall we knew we needed to select weather-resistant loudspeakers that provided an exemplary acoustic performance. Furthermore, we knew we needed a loudspeaker with very low distortion at high SPL levels. Evidently the need for the system to truly be mobile meant we needed to fabricate custom carts. Based off the dimensions of the listening area and the storage area, we knew we needed to be able to easily adjust their height. So we drew up an idea, workshopped it with our fabrication team, and then got to work in the shop.
The Results
All things considered, we selected Community Professional Loudspeakers and subs. The IP8-1152WR96 2-Way 15” speaker top’s custom long-excursion LF driver delivers deep bass response and a balanced midrange in the most demanding applications. While the HF compression driver’s non-metallic diaphragm provides natural, transparent sound quality that accurately reproduces and complements any source. As well, the IS8-218WR is a compact, direct radiating subwoofer with large, balanced ports. This design provides optimal enclosure tuning and even air pressure distribution to the driver cone, reducing distortion and extending system longevity.
Not only do the carts make 240 lbs. a stack no problem to cart around, but these custom adjustable speaker carts fit through the doorways. And equally important, they extend to 9′ to throw to the back of the patio. In five simple steps, go from rolling carts to rock n’ roll. Two people can roll out these speaker carts and set up this system in less than four minutes. Go from a storage closet to a fully functional full-range PA system in the duration of a song. So to summarize, rock n’ roll!
